Are You Paralyzed?

The business climate today has caused many businesses to become so myopic that they cannot step outside of the urgent issues of the day. The result is paralysis.  Take the time to ponder the unthinkable to keep the big picture in place. Ask yourself these critical questions to provide perspective:
  • What single event or chain of events -- that seem impossible to happen -- could destroy or severely damage your business if it DID happen?
  • What events outside your industry could damage your industry?
  • Are you so deeply lodged in only one product niche that a catastrophe could wipe out your buyer's desire or financial capacity to buy your products?
  • Is that "catastrophe" within your span of control to prevent or minimize? If so, what are you doing to prevent it?
  • Are you too dependent on one customer? (Did you already lose them?)
  • Are you too dependent on one product? (Have changes in the market made it less relevant?)
  • Are there any new products or new technologies currently being developed by a competitor that could revolutionize your industry -- to your detriment?

These questions are just the tip of the iceberg. What actions will you take to eliminate or reduce your vulnerabilities? How much attention will you give them? How urgent will you make them? What steps are you taking to predict the unpredictable? To prevent the unpreventable? To stop the unstoppable?

Remember, it was not the tip of the iceberg that caused the Titanic to sink; everyone saw the obvious. The real threat is often times out of view just below the surface.
