A New Dilemma for Hardware Product Managers?

Is there a new dilemma brewing for hardware product managers or has the recession just exacerbated an ongoing issue?

Imagine that you've got your five-year product roadmap all teed up, your CEO is behind it 100% and prepared to present it to the board of directors.  So far, so good right.  But a new speed bump now sits between your plan and board approval - your suppliers.

Such is the case with the new Chrysler's five year product plan.  The issue:  persuading suppliers to spend money up front to develop parts for new models, especially when Chrysler may not be willing to guarantee production volumes.

To what extent is this a new issue for hardware product managers?  Beside automotive, is it an issue in other segments?
